St Anthony’s Charity Institutes, Mangalore, justly famed all over India and abroad had a humble beginning. 12th June 1898 may be said to be its Birthday. It was on that day the late Msgr Michael Placid Colaco, commonly known as Msgr M.P. Colaco, sowed the mustard seed which in the designs of Providence was destined to grow into proportions which the founder could hardly have conceived.
In the year 1898, when Fr John S. Abreo was the Parish Priest of Our Lady of Miracles (Milagres)Parish, situated at Hampankatta, the centre of Mangalore Town, Fr M.P. Colaco was his Assistant. With the approval and guidance of the Parish Priest, the young and energetic Assistant began to give shape to his idea of St Anthony’s Shrine. In 1680 when Bishop Thomas de Castro had build the Church of Our Lady of Miracles at Hampankatta, he had also put up a side altar dedicated to St Anthony and installed the statue of the Saint thereon.

Milagres Shrine in Mangaluru Celebrates Seventh Day of Novena in Anticipation of St Anthony's Annual Relic Feast

MANGALURU, FEB 12: St Anthony Shrine at Milagres Church in Mangaluru

observed the seventh day of the novena leading up to the annual relic feast of

St Anthony of Padua on February 12, 2025

The Eucharistic Mass was presided over by Rev. Fr Andrew Dsouza, parish

priest of Bondel Church along with Rev. Fr J B Crasta the Director, Fr Avinash

Pais, Assistant Directors of St Anthony Charitable Institutions in Jeppu.

Fr Andrew’s sermon centred on the theme, “Patience: A Powerful Tool for

Pilgrims of Hope.” He urged the congregation to nurture the virtue of patience,

emphasising that a patient person can adapt and thrive in any situation or

environment. He highlighted how endurance leads to inner peace, while

tolerance strengthens our spirit in the face of challenges.

Drawing inspiration from the lives of the prophets, Mother Mary, and Jesus, Fr

Andrew reflected on how their unwavering patience amidst trials became a

testament to their faith and trust in God’s plan. He concluded by reminding the

faithful that patience not only fosters hope but also guides us on our journey

as pilgrims, steadfast in faith and resilient in hope.

Following the Mass, Fr Avinash Pais led the novena, with special prayers for the

donors and well-wishers of the St Anthony Ashram. The Children Choir from

Bondel Church added a melodious dimension to the expressions of gratitude.

Eighth Day of Novena in Anticipation of St Anthony's Annual Relic Feast held at Milagres

MANGALURU, FEB 13: St Anthony Shrine at Milagres Church in Mangaluru

maked the eighth day of the novena leading up to the annual relic feast of St

Anthony of Padua on February 13, 2024.

The Eucharistic Mass was presided over by Rev. Fr Maxim Dsouza, Parish

Priest, Jeppu Church along with Fr Gilbert Dsouza, Chaplain and Fr Nelson peris

the assistant director of St Anthony Charitable Institutions, Jeppu.

Fr Maxim's sermon centred on the theme "Shoulder the Cross of Others,

Become Pilgrims of Hope." He emphasised that countless people around us

bear heavy crosses—many are helpless, burdened, hopeless, and destitute. By

sharing our time and resources with others, we can bring them joy and

happiness. He reminded that without following the Cross of Jesus, we cannot

truly become pilgrims of hope. Engaging in small yet meaningful acts of

kindness, he said, will surely lead us on this path.

residents of the ashram. The Choir members of Jeppu Church added a

Sixth Day of Novena: Be Less in the World to Be More with God!: Fr Rupesh Madtha

MANGALURU, FEB 11: The St Anthony Shrine at Milagres Church in Mangaluru

marked the sixth day of the novena preceding the annual relic feast of St

Anthony of Padua on February 11, 2025.

The Eucharistic Mass was presided over by Rev. Fr Rupesh Madtha, Editor,

Raknno Konkani weekly along with Rev. Fr J.B. Crasta, Director of St Anthony

Charitable Institutions in Jeppu and Fr Avinash Pais, Assistant Director of the

ashram.

Fr Rupesh’s sermon centred on the theme: "Penance, Sacrifice, and

Abstinence: The Path to Becoming Pilgrims of Hope." He emphasized that to

truly fall in love with God, we must embrace penance, sacrifice, and

abstinence. By abstaining from sin, we draw closer to our loving God.

To cling to God and yearn for Jesus, these spiritual disciplines are

essential—they fortify us as pilgrims of hope. Be ‘less’ in the world to be

‘more’ with God. Jesus remained steadfast in His journey because He rejected

Satan, lived without sin, and remained deeply connected to His Father. He

urged the faithful to always keep their hearts longing for more of God.

Following the Mass, Fr Avinash Pais led the novena, with special prayers for

pilgrims. The Choir members of Infant Mary Church, Bajjodi added a melodious

dimension to the expressions of gratitude.

Active participation characterised the sixth day of the ongoing novena, set to

continue until February 15, 2025. The communal spirit was heightened as

attendees enjoyed the sweet dish, Payasam.
